Although it may seem far away, spring weather is right around the corner. Here are some tips to get your Chicago home ready for the change in temperature:
1. Inspect HVAC System
Set up an appointment to have a professional inspect you HVAC. It’s much better to catch any issues now than to wait until spring or summer when it’s harder to get an appointment to fix your air conditioning – leaving you a bit toasty!
2. Inspect Smoke Detectors
Remember to test your smoke detector monthly. Right now, with the time change, it’s also good time to mark on your calendar to annually replace the batteries in your smoke detector.
3. Switch to Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs
Compact fluorescent lightbulbs are more energy efficient and will save you money. Since these lightbulbs give off less heat than regular lightbulbs, they will help to keep your home cooler during the warmer months.
4. Clean Dryer Vents
Lint and dust build up in your dryer vents have the potential to cause a fire. By cleaning out your dryer vents, your clothes will also dry faster, this will save energy and money.
5. Replace Refrigerator Filters for Ice/Water Dispensers
In order to ensure your refrigerator is dispensing clean ice and water, clean or replace your water filter every six months.
6. Clean Gutters & Downspouts
The snow is bound to melt sometime soon. Spring time is also known to bring some rainy days. Clean out any excess debris that has built up in your gutters and downspouts in order to keep the rain water run off functioning properly.
7. Inspect & Repair Caulk on Windows & Doors
The winter weather can wear and tear on the seal on your doors and window. Inspect and repair any damaged caulk on your windows and doors.
